In 2005, inspired by the upcoming IMCoS symposium, UFM officially established a map division within its library. The collection includes maps from two important personal libraries donated to UFM. One belonged to José Cecilio del Valle, a founder of Central American independence, and includes a historically important map by Cruz Cano y Olmedilla, a complete atlas by Van der Maelen, and many maps in their original books. The collection of Carlos Elmenhorst focuses on travel and exploration in Central America dating from the 16th century.

A goal of the Map Division is to stimulate interest among students and professors in cartography. It will also serve as a gathering place for map lovers. UFM’s New Media Department will soon place it on the web.
